Rex chooses Gold Coast over Brisbane in leisure play

The leisure market is mooted as the next major battleground for Regional Express (Rex), which has dumped plans to offer flights to Brisbane in time for Easter, deciding instead to service Gold Coast routes as the country carrier pivots away from the mid-market model touted before the launch of capital city flights.

Deputy chairman John Sharp – a former transport minister in the Howard government – said part of the reason behind the switch was that Gold Coast Airport was more willing to reduce costs and provide financial incentives to the upstart airline than its northern peer. He made clear flights to Brisbane were still on the agenda for Rex, but would start further down the line.
