Elon Musk declared the autonomous car a “solved problem” back in 2015, but Tesla still doesn’t sell one. Established car companies and dozens of start-ups have spent billions, with equally disappointing results.

However, in some ways autonomy is closer than many realise, with computer controls now enabling even budget cars to automatically brake to avoid a collision, correct a slide, and steer themselves back into a lane if a driver loses concentration.
