As our appetite for leisure travel boomed this decade, high-end travel operators got truly adventurous.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is billed as the world’s first underwater hotel.  

When it comes to trends in the luxury travel space over the past decade, the Singapore-based boss of Accor Hotels' Asia-Pacific empire, Michael Issenberg, has a simple vox-pop test: "If you ask most people what's the one thing they would do more of if they had more time and money, what do you think they would mostly answer?"

Pause for dramatic effect: "Travel," he pronounces with a flourish.
