It was a celebratory atmosphere that prevailed in the southern Indian city of Mysuru last weekend, as officials gathered just hours away from several of India’s major tiger reserves.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced – to much applause – that the country’s tiger population had increased to more than 3000 since a flagship conservation program began 50 years ago out of concern the big cats were dwindling.
