Why Lewis Hamilton may still be racing past 40
The British Formula 1 great is as fit as ever at 37 and the record eighth world title he craves may not be beyond his grasp.
Suzuka | There are not many sports in which the athletes involved improve when they get to the wrong side of 40. Golf has seen major champions in their 40s and even 50s. Ronnie O’Sullivan won his latest world snooker title at 46. Tom Brady inspired the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl at 43.
But they are the exceptions rather than the rule. The trade-off between experience on the one hand and loss of physical strength and endurance on the other tends to see a performance drop-off in the mid-to-late 30s. It is just an immutable law of nature.
