The current generation of American women footballers has already struck one significant blow for equality. Last year, United States team players forced US Soccer, their governing body, to agree to pay those in the national side as much as their male peers, and to fork out $US24 million in back pay.
At the Women’s World Cup, which is under way in Australia and New Zealand, several members of the team are tackling another of the sport’s shibboleths: motherhood.
