Running fiend and federal Labor MP Andrew Leigh says the Sydney Marathon’s elevation to the sport’s highest echelon will be a boon for tourism and fitness in Australia.

The Sydney race on Monday joined Tokyo, Boston, Chicago, New York, Berlin and London as one of the world’s seven marathon majors, capping off a three-year program to improve the event.
