The Matildas’ rise to the summit of world football would be worth a public holiday if small business didn’t have to foot the bill.
The Matildas’ nerve-racking 7- 6 penalty shootout quarter-final triumph over France on Saturday evening has catapulted Australia’s women footballers into a league of their own.
The record 4.17 million people who tuned in – not counting streamers and fans watching in pubs and clubs, on outdoor screens, and in the stands at AFL and rugby league games – eclipsed the previous record for the biggest TV sporting audience.
