These are my first Olympics and they are being held in the country I call home. As such, I knew I would be cheering for both Japan and Australia and that at times I would feel a sense of conflict when my two countries came up against each other.

I also knew I would feel hot, as in really hot. The Tokyo 2020 pitch dossier performed acrobatics with the truth when it described Tokyo in July as having “many days of mild and sunny weather” (guffaw!) and providing “an ideal climate for athletes to perform at their best”.
