Only the cruel would wish the Wallabies annihilation at the weekend when they confront the All Blacks in Sydney.

But in the catastrophic defeat at the hands of a rampant Argentinian side a fortnight ago, the grim reality of Australian rugby’s parlous present, and uncertain future, was again revealed. Any recovery of the game’s fortunes, on or off the field, will take a long time.
