Aussie loses five-set heartbreaker as Iga Swiatek survives scrap

Australian Max Purcell lost a gut-wrenching five-setter but won fans and respect in his four-hour showdown with Norway’s Casper Ruud, while top women’s seed Iga Swiatek survived after having one foot at the airport.

Purcell, whose booming serve is as eye-catching as his curls, lived and died by the sword against Ruud in the second round of the Australian Open.
