Why Ross Gittins is wrong about supermarket price gouging

Who would have thought oligopolies can sustain competition? Woolies and Coles have increased grocery prices less than British supermarkets.

How about this? Australian supermarket shoppers have been hit by significantly lower grocery price rises than if they were living in the UK, the US, Canada or New Zealand.

Yes, lower price hikes than even the UK, where discounter Aldi has broken into the “big four” of Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons to create one of the world’s most competitive supermarket markets.
