Super Retail Group chief executive Peter Birtles' stellar 13-year career at the auto, sports and outdoor retailer has been marred by a second underpayments scandal that will cost the company $43 million this year, decimating earnings.

Mr Birtles will step down next week – one month earlier than planned – after taking full responsibility for the company's failure to correctly pay retail managers overtime and meal allowances for the past six years.
