‘Reform is needed’: why ACCC is looking at Woolies and Coles stores

Woolworths and Coles have opened 394 stores since the 2008 grocery inquiry but only a handful have crossed the ACCC’s desk. That may be about to change.

The days of Woolworths and Coles opening unlimited new stores each year – crimping the growth of rivals such as Harris Farm, Aldi and IGA – may be numbered.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, as part of its year-long inquiry into supermarkets, plans to use its information-gathering powers to scrutinise stores opened by Woolworths and Coles as part of its investigations into identifying barriers to entry and expansion for competitors.
