Sydney restaurateur Paola Toppi, the daughter of late dining doyenne Giovanna Toppi who founded Sydney CBD institution Machiavelli, has made “serious allegations” against her brother Walter as an internal family war over her mother’s will burst into the open in court.
Giovanna, who died aged 85 in 2021 after a long sickness, was behind La Strada restaurant in Hughes Street, Potts Point, which started in 1979 and was known as a magnet for celebrities including Mick Jagger and Elton John. She went on to open Machiavelli in 1988, which became Sydney’s original power dining destination, but has since been sold.
