Cup Day rate rise casts pall over Black Friday, Christmas spending

Retailers are counting on Black Friday to save Christmas, but the latest rate rise could dent confidence and force retailers to discount more deeply.

Retailers could be forgiven for thinking the Reserve Bank of Australia has it in for them.

Just as spending appeared to be picking up steam, lifting retailers’ spirits in the run-up to the festive season, the RBA raised the official cash rate for the first time in four months to the highest rate in 12 years.
