Shareholder class actions plunge after prominent corporate victories

New shareholder class action filings have dropped to their lowest level in almost a decade, after a series of corporate defendants succeeded in fighting group claims instead of opting for settlement.

In the past financial year, the Federal Court dismissed prominent claims against engineering group Worley, Insignia Financial and Commonwealth Bank, ending a period where swift settlement was seen as a favourable option.
