The 2026 Melbourne Commonwealth Games will never take place, but if you’d like to see how the medals would have looked, there’s a complete set of gold, silver and bronze decorating the office of Leon Zwier.
The Arnold Bloch Leibler partner was dispatched to London after then-premier Daniel Andrews announced in mid-2023 that Victoria was pulling out of the games. The $380 million settlement he negotiated might be rued by many Victorians; especially since it emerged that they’ll effectively fund Glasgow to hold the event instead. But given the Commonwealth Games Federation was initially after billions, Andrews presumably thought Zwier’s performance was medal-winning.
