Public practice accountants have accused the owners of accounting software package HandiSoft of commercial “blackmail” for charging thousands of dollars for access to archived data after they switched to rival accounting software Xero.
The accountants said The Access Group, which owns HandiSoft, asked them to make payments ranging from $2000 to more than $6000 for continued access to their data after the move to Xero’s cloud-based system.
This article has been updated to clarify that HandiSoft does not offer a ‘read-only’ version of their software.
