15 years of drift: Why global law firms can’t make it in Australia

UK and US law firms are battling for market share on either side of the Atlantic. But expansion has proven more difficult in Australia.

Partners at Herbert Smith Freehills are voting this week on whether to merge with New York-based firm Kramer Levin.

If all goes to plan, and the deal is voted through by 75 per cent of partners, it will mark the first international merger involving a major Australian player since a wave of foreign entrants swept into the local market in the past decade on the back of a resources boom and strong Australian dollar.
