BHP chief executive Andrew Mackenzie believes his successor must have a detailed understanding of minerals and geology, as chairman Ken MacKenzie confirmed the company was continuing work to groom internal candidates to eventually replace the Scottish geoscientist.

Andrew Mackenzie is in his seventh year at the top of BHP and does not believe the role of a chief executive is so discrete that leaders can easily switch industry sectors to run companies that are outside  their core skill set.
