The soaring cost of Indigenous cultural heritage surveys is straining relations between miners and native title groups amid accusations that archaeologists and anthropologists are “ripping off” both sectors with “exorbitant” fees.

The growing cost of heritage surveys has forced taxpayers to subsidise the cost of protecting artefacts and sacred sites to ensure the exploration sector can continue discovering the next generation of Australian mines.
