Inside the attempted coup gripping New Zealand’s media

The dispute between the publisher of the NZ Herald and billionaire Jim Grenon – who wants to turf the board – is threatening to engulf Australian investors.

It was as sudden as it was aggressive, and it rocked New Zealand’s tight-knit media industry. James “Jim” Grenon, a billionaire Canadian, spent nearly $20 million buying up almost 10 per cent of New Zealand Media & Entertainment, the country’s largest listed media company.

Within days, he was demanding its entire board be removed.
