ABC managing director David Anderson has apologised to journalist Stan Grant and ordered a review of how the organisation responds to racism against staff, after Grant said sustained abuse had prompted him to quit the Q+A program.

Mr Anderson told staff in an email on Sunday afternoon there had been “sustained and vitriolic” coverage of the public broadcaster by commercial media outlets that had led to an unacceptable level of abuse, especially through social media.
