Labor prepares rescue plan after Gupta’s Whyalla steelworks collapses

The federal government will help fund a $500 million-plus upgrade to the Whyalla steelworks if a new buyer can be found after the South Australian government seized control of the plant from Sanjeev Gupta and brought in insolvency experts KordaMentha to run the troubled operations.

The upgrade will be part of a broader support package believed to be worth around $2 billion.
