Manufacturers reboot to ride the vinyl revival, but can it last?
Australia is home to triple the number of vinyl pressing plants since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic amid surging demand, but one industry figure is concerned about what could happen if the bubble pops.
Vinyl sales have rocketed in Australia throughout the last decade, with 127,000 12-inch LPs sold in 2012, 374,000 in 2015, 860,000 in 2018, and 1.1 million in the first year of the pandemic, according to ARIA. It has not released figures for 2022 yet, but 958,000 units were sold in 2021, suggesting vinyl may have peaked locally.
