When Sanjeev Gupta’s GFG Alliance first purchased the Whyalla steelworks off the collapsed Arrium in 2017, bagpipes led a worker’s parade to greet the steel magnate.

Leading the march was the might of South Australia’s Labor Party, including then-premier Jay Weatherill and then-treasurer Tom Koutsantonis, along with opposition leader Steven Marshall and federal senators Anne Ruston and Nick Xenophon.
