If your run is more of a plod, don’t be disheartened. In the age of sweat-inducing HIIT and competitive Hyrox, it’s easy to forget the value of pulling on a pair of trainers and heading out for a jog.

“Most people, particularly nowadays when we’re trying to be time efficient, are focused on high-intensity exercise,” said Dan Gordon, a professor of exercise physiology at Anglia Ruskin University.
