John Alexander didn't even try and hide his irritation. Crown's annual general meeting in October 2019, held in a function room at its Melbourne casino complex, was threatening to become a circus as shareholder advocate and part-time journalist Stephen Mayne peppered the board with questions.

“What’s the protocol with how we’re communicating with Mr Packer?" Mayne asked, referring to Crown's 36 per cent shareholder, James Packer.
