Ross McEwan is refusing to let me pay for lunch. We haven’t even sat down and I’ve been outmanoeuvred. The National Australia Bank chief executive and former basketball player has cleverly put himself between me and the EFTPOS terminal, and is deaf to my explanation that AFR Weekend always foots the bill.

“Don’t be silly,” he says pleasantly but firmly, tapping what I later learn is his personal card.
