Why investors can’t help worrying about inflation
The spectre of inflation is again haunting financial markets, causing investors to question whether central bankers will honour their pledge not to tighten prematurely.
Karen MaleyColumnistInvestors are a skittish lot at present. Though central bankers continue to soothe them with reassurances that interest rates will stay ultra-low for an extended period, investors can take fright when anything occurs that’s at odds with that narrative.
Such as when US Treasury secretary Janet Yellen, who used to head up the US central bank, suggested that US interest rates might “have to rise somewhat” to prevent the US economy from overheating given the hefty infrastructure investments the Biden administration is planning.
