What a car smash reveals about insurers and inflation

The oncoming car crossed the white centre line. Apparently, the driver had been distracted by his phone. He managed to veer back to his lane at the last second, but still sideswiped a hatchback.
The collision was so hard the hatchback’s side airbags were deployed and the vehicle was rendered a write-off. But in May, an odd thing turned up in the insurance settlement.
