Mortgage brokers back NSW payroll tax inquiry

The NSW upper house has launched an inquiry into the application of the state’s payroll tax laws, after mortgage brokers raised concerns about a court ruling in the state that found a company providing services to brokers owed payroll tax on commissions paid by banks.

Companies using contractors in various sectors – from cleaning, to logistics and agriculture – are also worried about a broader application of NSW’s payroll tax act, as the state leans more heavily on the revenue source.
