Good regulation could be the making of private markets

The goal should be a virtuous regulatory circle that increases investor confidence, weeds out cowboys, and thereby helps legitimise and spur the growth of both private equity and private credit firms.

Private equity and private credit markets are a growing part of global capital markets. It is entirely appropriate therefore for the corporate regulator to do some due diligence and get a sense check of whether the existing regulatory framework is fit for purpose.

The discussion paper on Australia’s evolving capital markets launched on Monday by Australian Securities and Investment Commission chairman Joe Longo starts in the right place by seeking to understand the known unknowns. It’s symbolic of the challenge facing ASIC.
