Why the states want cash for Albanese’s gas price caps

The Albanese government is determined to deliver energy price relief to domestic consumers but the industry and states are fighting its proposals for price caps on gas and coal.

Follow the money. The accusations flying between the states and the Commonwealth over the idea of price caps on thermal coal and gas for domestic consumers is more about hard dollars than high principle.

The states want to ensure any negotiations in national cabinet next weekend end up with Canberra paying them for any revenue loss, including the level of state royalties they are currently receiving from coal and gas prices.
