Weighing the nuclear option
The current South Australian Royal Commission on nuclear energy announced earlier this year by Premier Jay Weatherill is a paradox for many environmentalists. The "nuclear option" is only being considered because it generates base-load power with almost zero emissions.
Martin Thomas, from the Academy of Technological Sciences & Engineering (ATSE), says the emergence of nuclear as a serious debate is a welcome addition to Australia's long-term energy planning.
