Australian coal industry's future far from black
Coal production is an iconic Australian industry that has provided an essential building block in the country's economic development. It has been an important contributor to national income through increasing exports and domestically. It has provided the affordable and accessible energy that has given so many of our industries their comparative advantage.
The modern coal industry continues this pivotal role, maintaining the position as our second largest export and it is expected to boost national income by $250 billion by 2020. It is a major employer in NSW and Queensland, and is the mainstay of our electricity provision at 71 per cent of the total generation requirements.
