Price of LNG supply security hits $US20b

An enduring recession in regional spot gas prices will could refuel momentum for reform of the way contract LNG shipments are priced.

Now there is a set of numbers that just have to set alarm bells ringing for Australia’s gas exporters and their Australian government hosts.

According to research by S&P Global Platts, through just the opening nine months of the year north Asia’s power utilities paid $US23 billion ($34 billion) more for their contracted liquid natural gas supplies than they would have if they had relied on spot markets.
