The history of Australian mining is rich in heroes, but in the past 70 years, none can surpass Sir Arvi Parbo.
Parbo was born in Estonia in 1926 and was only 15 when Germany invaded the tiny Baltic nation. The Nazis made the boy a forced labourer in Germany’s underground mines and he stayed in that dirty, dangerous job until the war ended in 1945.
