Woodside Energy says it is crucial to the national interest and to global energy security. Western Australia wants it to underpin the state’s gas industry for decades. Environmental activists describe it as a monumentally destructive climate disaster in the making.

After six years of environmental objections, appeals and protests, D-Day is approaching for North West Shelf, with federal authorities poised to decide whether to allow another five decades of gas operations off WA’s coast.
