Murray-Darling in worse condition despite $8.5b spend

The health of the country’s most important river system has worsened over the past decade despite $8.5 billion in federal government spending, in what one water economist described as a “national scandal”.

As questions continue to be asked over the government’s $80 million buyback of irrigation licences from a Cayman Island’s company, experts say the bigger issue is the money wasted on projects that have failed to improve the Murray-Darling Basin.
