Bird flu fears put health authorities, farmers on edge
Health authorities are on alert after two unrelated cases of bird flu were detected in Victoria, including the first local infection in a human, amid international alarm over the mass deaths of animals.
They insist there is no need for panic, however, with the infected child making a full recovery and little chance of human-to-human spread. Still, hundreds of thousands of chickens have been slaughtered at an egg farm to avoid a wider outbreak.
