Why Ares is taking another big bet on Australia

Fresh from buying AMP’s infrastructure debt business and a stake in Genworth, the Australian arm of $420 billion giant Ares is targeting private lending.

The $420 billion US investment giant Ares has made its latest big move in Australia, with the group’s direct lending team completing its first deal Down Under as it seeks to ride the extraordinary rise of the local private equity sector.

Ares, run in Australia by former Credit Suisse local boss John Knox, has committed $280 million to waste management company Waste Services Group, as part of the acquisition of that company by British private equity firm Livingbridge.
