Newcrest’s $4b growth plan has a copper tinge

Newcrest’s plan to lift its gold production and halve its costs over the next decade will also see it markedly boost its copper output. 

Sandeep Biswas wants to make it clear: Newcrest is still very much a gold miner.

But the mining veteran, who took the helm of Newcrest in 2014, is fond of saying that a great gold company is one that has plenty of copper, and that’s never been more true than right now, with copper prices surging thanks to the role the mineral is playing in the electrification of the planet.
