Fossil fuels, critical minerals, agriculture, higher education and tourism have been great for Australia’s trade balance, budget and living standards. They’re all the past and present, and will be part of the future. But if we’re to prosper, we’re going to need more.
What’s out there? The options aren’t plentiful: the renewable energy superpower dream has stalled, green hydrogen looks like a furphy, nickel and lithium miners are dead or clinging on for survival and the whole Future Made In Australia strategy, designed to profit from the move away from fossil fuels and towards net zero emissions, is struggling for victories.
