Car engulfed at Norwood
A 33-year-old man charged after car was found engulfed in flames inside Norwood carpark
A suspected arsonist, believed to be homeless, has been charged after a car caught on fire at an underground Norwood carpark on Wednesday morning.
Emergency services were called to Parade and Osmond Tce, at 6.20am after reports of a car fire in an underground car park.
MFS Crews arrived to find the car fully engulfed in flames, with one car destroyed and others believed to have sustained damage.
Following an inspection of the carpark, detectives found clothes and a cardboard box.
The owner of the Mercedes was headed to the gym around the time the fire sparked, while her husband Eric Carbone said he’s not sure if the suspected arson was sleeping rough.
“There’s a box in there, so I’m not sure if he was laying in the carpark or not,” Mr Carbone told 7News.
“I think they need some help, we need to action this because we don’t want this sort of thing to happen again.”
MFS spokesman Mark Hawkins said firefighters struggled to contain the blaze.
“We struggled to get on top of it because it was a running fuel fire, from the owner we found out it was 70 litres of fuel and filled up yesterday,” Mr Hawkins said.
“All we could do was control it and allow the fuel to run out.
The suspect, a 33-year-old man of no fixed address, was charged with arson.
He is expected to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court either later today or tomorrow.
Police warned the fuel fire is expected to continue burning for some time, and will likely cause smoke in the area.
The public are being urged to avoid the area near the corner of the Parade and Osmond Tce because of the smoke.
Anyone with information, dashcam or CCTV footage that could assist the investigation is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
