Show pug Yogi’s miracle escape from fire in Adelaide’s north

Two women in their 60s have been taken to hospital and a 15-month-old show dog has suffered burns to his eye and head after a house fire broke out in Parafield Gardens on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called to Casuarina Drive just after 11am, with 13 firefighters quickly extinguishing the blaze.

Two women, who were in the house when the fire broke out, suffered burns, one of whom is in a serious condition and has been transported to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The other woman is in a stable condition and has been transported to the Lyell McEwin Hospital.

Two dogs were also at home at the time. An elder dog escaped without injury but a show pug named Yogi had to be treated for burns.

Friend of the family Donna McClarty, who bred Yogi, was asked to take the pug to the vet while the elder dog remains with the neighbour.

Ms McClarty told The Advertiser the young dog was rescued by a man providing quotes for solar panels.

“One of the dogs is 15 years old, she got out quite okay but Yogi was near the fire when it started and got a burst of it on the side of his face and his head,” she said.

A mobile vet has since treated Yogi, who competes in dog shows, with antibiotics, painkillers and ointment for his eye.

“I think he will be a okay, his eye is the … worry but the vet said he won’t know anything for 48 hours, when the burns start to come out properly, so we’ve got to take him back to the vet on Friday,” Ms McClarty said.

“I am very worried about his eye but apart from that he’s in good spirits, he’s quite happy, he doesn’t seem depressed or miserable, which is a good thing.”

‘Heavy flames’: Homes at Banksia Park and Clare engulfed by fire

A serious fire erupted in the bedroom of a Banksia Park home – hours before another property was badly damaged by fire in Clare.

Just after 8pm on Tuesday, MFS attended a fire report on Grenfell Rd in Banksia Park.

An MFS spokeswoman said 25 firefighters from four appliances, supported by one CFS appliance, fought the blaze.

“On arrival crews saw heavy flames showing through the front of the house originating in the bedroom and spreading rapidly,” she said.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the fire within 25 minutes, which prevented it from spreading to neighbouring properties.

There was one occupant inside the home at the time when the fire broke out.

She was treated by firefighters with oxygen therapy until the paramedics arrived.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

The occupant of the unit – a 59-year-old man – was evacuated but sustained injuries and was taken by ambulance to the local hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Two occupants of the neighbouring unit also suffered smoke inhalation.

The building sustained significant smoke and water damage; the estimated damage value of the properties is $300,000.

Mr Van Hai said he had no idea what set off the fire.

“The flames were really big, when I walked up to the front they were on top of the window,” Mr Van Hai told 7NEWS.

Fire investigators have attributed the cause of the fire to a discarded cigarette.

MFS Wayne Adams told 7NEWS: “Just need to be a little bit more diligent with candles and cigarettes and etc because they do easily start a structure fire.”

The damage bill is estimated to be around $20,000.
