Italian travel blogger Gabriele Cairo has admitted killing three members of the same Mid North family in a single car crash – and wants his sentence hearing to be held as soon as possible.
In the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday, Cairo pleaded guilty to having caused the deaths of Jacqueline Clark and her parents, Cynthia and John, by dangerous driving.
He also pleaded guilty to having caused serious harm, by dangerous driving, to his new wife, Elena Perrone, in the same crash.
Ms Perrone, who watched the hearing from the court gallery, wept as her husband entered his pleas in English, saying “guilty, Your Honour” in response to all four charges.
Cairo, 28, of La Salle in Italy, was charged following a crash at Everard Central in November last year.
Prosecutors allege he was behind the wheel of a van that collided with a Honda Civic at the intersection of Templeton Rd and Blyth Rd.
Cynthia, 84, and her daughter Jacqueline, 54, died at the scene while their husband and father John, 86, died subsequently in hospital.
Ms Perrone, was also seriously injured – the couple, who are part-time travel bloggers, were honeymooning at the time.
Last month, Cairo’s counsel said the case was “very likely to resolve” without a trial, and that their client wanted to meet with the trio’s extended family in person.
On Tuesday, prosecutors withdrew the count of aggravated driving without due care.
Mr Woods asked the case be remanded to the soonest-available date in the District Court, noting his client is from overseas and living on a temporary visa.
Magistrate Simon Smart said the next available date was in July, and remanded Cairo on continuing bail until then.
Outside court, neither Cairo nor the Clark family made comment.
