The driver who allegedly caused the crash that killed a Mid North family is an Italian honeymooner and part-time international travel blogger whose new wife was also injured on impact.

Gabriele Cairo, 28, of La Salle in Italy, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with multiple serious driving offences.

Mr Cairo, who the court heard speaks very little English, has yet to plead to allegations he caused the deaths of Cynthia, John and Jacqueline Clark by dangerous driving at Everard Central in November last year.

Mr Cairo is further charged with having caused harm to his wife Elena Perrone, 26, who was a passenger in the van he was driving.

Previously, SA Police have alleged Cynthia, 84, and Jacqueline, 54, died when their Honda Civic collided with Mr Cairo’s van at the intersection of Templeton Rd and Blyth Rd.

John, 86, was flown to hospital but subsequently died from critical injuries sustained in the crash.

Ms Perrone also suffered critical injuries, while Mr Cairo sustained minor damage.

The Clarks’ funeral was attended by 300 people, with mourners paying tribute to their many contributions to the Mid North community.

Mr Cairo and Ms Perrone operate several social media accounts and a YouTube channel called “Hakuna Matata Viaggi”, all of which chart their international travel.

Their photos and videos show them visiting numerous locations in Los Angeles, Hawaii, Las Vegas, Dubai, Ibiza and Kenya.

The accounts describe Mr Cairo and Ms Perrone as “the travel couple” and “part-time travel bloggers”.

On Wednesday, Hugh Woods, for Mr Cairo, asked the case be adjourned – but not for the 14 weeks requested by police.

“These charges are major indictable and will need to be referred to the District Court,” he said.

“My client resides in Italy and is currently here on a tourist visa … we’ll require an interpreter on the next occasion, he speaks little English.

“Our position is to seek that next date be sooner than 14 weeks … police have already had quite a period of time to make preliminary determinations and gather preliminary evidence.”

Magistrate Justin Wickens agreed, remanding Mr Cairo on continuing bail to face court again in March.
