A Hectorville man whose knifepoint carjacking ended in a six-hour rooftop standoff has pleaded guilty to two charges against him.

On Tuesday, counsel for Dwayne Haggerty told Magistrate John Wells her client would be pleading guilty to the two remaining charges from his offending in February.

From the dock, Haggerty, of Hectorville, responded “guilty” to charges of aggravated committing theft using force and driving dangerously to cause police pursuit.

Mr Wells said a remaining charge of driving with a suspended or disqualified licence “should” be dismissed because it was an aggravating feature to his driving dangerously charge

It was alleged Haggerty, 23, was one of two men who booked a rideshare driver just after 2am on February 1, before threatening him with a knife and forcing him out of his Toyota sedan at Parafield Gardens.

The court heard during the robbery Haggerty took the driver’s phone, wallet, iPod and a dashcam.

Around 3am, police used the car’s tracking system to follow it to West Ave at Edinburgh, with the Polair helicopter chasing the vehicle from above until the suspects dumped it on Burton Rd at Paralowie and fled on foot.

Prosecution said Mr Haggerty then climbed on to the roof of a house, prompting a six-hour standoff with officers and police negotiators.

He was not charged with any offences relating to the standoff.

Haggerty was remanded on continuing bail to appear in the District Court for sentencing submissions in September.
